Footnotes

Takis – described by Marcel Duchamp in 1962 as 'a happy ploughman of magnetic fields and signalman on soft railroads'- spent most of his artistic life studying the relationship between art and science. Based in Paris since the 1950s, Takis encountered several distinguished personalities such as Duchamp, Yves Klein and Jean Tinguely, whose intellectual views influenced him. A self taught artist, Takis is internationally recognised as a key figure in the development of post-war sculpture. He participated in Documenta, the Venice Biennale, and the Paris Biennale, and he has been the subject of solo shows at Tate Modern, the Palais de Tokyo, the Menil Collection, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona.

Executed in 1974, The Boy embodies one of Takis finest examples of his erotic sculptures, a series that he produced after his return to Paris that same year. Highly provocative in its nature, the work aims to celebrate male masculinity and indirectly address the western conservative ideals of public art. The erect phallus attached to a cosmic sphere, centres the man, and his erotic nature at the centre of the world and sets the forces of attraction as the denominator of eroticism and subsequently of the world.
