Gems From Theo Waddington's Private Picture Collection at Bonhams British and European Art Sale in London

London – Not every 13-year-old boy is given a Jack Butler Yeats painting for his birthday by the artist himself, with his very own personal dedication ('From the youngest Yeats to the youngest Waddington'). But then, Theo Waddington was not an average teenager. Son of the gallerist, Victor, younger brother of Leslie, and an internationally famous art dealer himself, Theo can't remember a time when art and artists were not part of his life. A selection of his wonderful private collection of pictures is to be offered at Bonhams 218-lot British and European Art sale in Knightsbridge on Wednesday 10 November. It includes La Buvette by the French painter Henri Hayden (1883-1970), estimated at £12,000-18,000.

Bonhams Head of Pictures at Knightsbridge, Veronique Scorer, said: "We are thrilled to be offering pictures from the collection of Theo Waddington. The Waddington name is synonymous with the London and international art scene and many of the works included here are by artists that Theo knows or has known personally. Now living a much quieter existence Theo feels it is time to let go of some of his collection in order that others may love and enjoy these works."
Other highlights include:

Vue sur Mollien by Henri Hayden. Estimate: £5,000-7,000.
Nature morte dans un Jardin by Henri Hayden. Estimate: £6,000-8.000.
Ballycastle, Co. Mayo, Evening, 1915 by Jack Butler Yeats (Irish 1871-1957). Estimate: £4,000-6,000.
Newspapers by P J Crook (British b 1945). Estimate: £2,000-3,000.

Theo Waddington was born in Dublin in November 1943, son of Victor Waddington, the art dealer who played a pivotal role in progressing the cause of modern art in Ireland, and the younger brother of Leslie Waddington, also an art dealer. Theo joined his father, uncle, and brother in the business, and learned how to be a successful art dealer himself before heading to Canada where he took over his uncle's gallery in Montreal. In due course he opened galleries in Toronto and New York and, when Victor became ill, Theo also took over his father's gallery in London. At one stage, he had five art galleries and more than 40 staff.

The sale also features works by members of the École de Paris, Jewish émigré artists who made Paris their home in the opening decades of the 20th century. These include:

La bataille by Simon Mondzain (Szamaj Mondszajn) (Polish, circa 1887/1888-1979). Estimate: £5,000-7,000.
Au Jardin by Henri Epstein (Polish, 1891-1944). Estimate: £5,000-7,000.
