    Barcaldine Castle, the 'Black Castle', near Oban, is one of the few mediaeval castles in Scotland which appears practically unchanged. It was built in the late 16th Century as a military outpost by Sir Duncan Campbell of Glenorchy (Black Duncan).
    A further view of Barcaldine Castle, dated 1928, is illustrated in T. Hewlett, Cadell A Scottish Colourist, London, 1988, p. 71, pl. 64.
