A copy of an examination report by Joseph D. Ketner, II, dated January 5, 2012, accompanies the lot. An excerpt of his essay included in the report is below:

'Young America is a rare, early painting by Robert S. Duncanson from the first decade of his professional career, when he was traveling regularly between Cincinnati and Detroit painting portraits, still lifes, historical, and "fancy" pictures on commission. The painting portrays a young, blonde sailor brandishing a saber, while holding an American flag that wraps around him, blown by the coastal wind, as a battle rages in the distance. Duncanson imaginatively adapted the popular subject of "Young America" for this dramatic painting. The image of "Young America" proliferated in prints, advertisements, political propaganda, and on sheet music from the 1830s through the 1860s. During the 1840s, the formative period of Duncanson's career, the artist regularly painted canvases from prints. In this painting Duncanson has appropriated the "Young America" subject to create possibly the earliest patriotic painting of the Mexican-American war period.'
