THE 240Z
'In the sixties no-one who knew anything about cars would have predicted that the Japanese would ever build a classic or thoroughbred. By the early seventies, however, they had to change their minds - the Z-Car had arrived.' - Graham Robson.
There had been Datsun sports cars before the 240Z, most notably the Fairlady series of the 1960s, but with the Big Z's arrival in 1969 the Japanese firm established itself as a major force to be reckoned with in the sports/GT market. Indeed, the Datsun 240Z was the first Japanese-made sports car to achieve worldwide recognition. Although designed at Nissan by a team headed by Yoshiko Matsuo, with input from consultant Count Albrecht Goertz, stylist of the BMW 503 and 507, the 240Z looked every inch a European product.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
This striking 1970 Datsun 240Z Fastback is a desirable Series 1 example, produced in the very first full production year. The car was built for the US market during September of 1970, and delivered new to Orange County, California. The original owner's manual and warranty booklet with warranty card on file, calls for the car having been sold new to a Mr. David L. Fairchild of La Habra, CA in November of 1970, by the Fullerton-based Datsun dealer. The car was finished from the factory as it appears today, in the era-evoking Mexican Orange exterior color over a black interior.
A comprehensive cosmetic restoration has been carried out in the past few years, where the 240Z received new seats, a carburetor rebuild, engine detailing and much more. The odometer reading of just 78,809 miles at the time of cataloging is believed to be original, and the old 1970s blue and yellow California license plates remain on the car, cementing its California residency, where the car is reported to have had just 2 owners from new. The 240Z is fitted with period-appropriate alloy wheels and is offered with the original tools and jack in factory bags. Featuring lovely straight and solid bodywork with stunning paint work, this is a fine example of the Series 1 'Z' with a 4-speed manual transmission and its original matching numbers engine in place.
